Installing electrics in a summer house

Electrical installations in the garden, including garden buildings, such as a summer house, should always be carried out by a NICEIC or NAPIT registered electrician. This is a legal requirement according to Part P of UK Building Regulations. This ensures your safety as your garden electrical work is carried out by qualified, competent individuals who understand the risk of working with electricity outside. Your electrician will want to ensure your summer house is watertight and safe to install an electrical supply to before they begin any planned work. They will discuss your plans with you and make certain that all possibilities have been considered. A secondary consumer unit may need to be added to your summer house and this will be discussed with you prior to the commencement of works. The new circuit will also need to be protected by a residual current device (RCD). This keeps you safe by immediately cutting power should a fault occur.  

Once your plans for the summer house are clear, the electrical installation can begin. An armoured cable will be laid to carry electricity to your summer house, and this will either be buried in a trench or run along the fence. Once this is safely installed the rest of the installation will be carried out. Sockets, lighting, and any additional electrical equipment will be added. After work is completed, your electrician will issue an electrical installation certificate and notify building control at your local authority.
